Private John Talley, Dragoon, Pioneer, Patriot

John Talley was born on or about 1761 in Amelia County, Virginia.  In early 1781, he enlisted as a private in the Continental Army for two years and served with a troop with the the 3rd Continental Light Dragoons.   LtCol William Washington was the regiment commander. Captain William Parsons was the troop commander.  John fought at the battle of Guilford Courthouse, NC; Hobkirk's Hill, SC; and Eutaw Springs, SC.  In September 1781, he was temporarily assigned to the 4th Continental Light Dragoons at Yorktown, or Little York, as he called it, the last major land campaign between the American and British forces.  Until the Peace Treaty with Britain was signed in April 1783, he remained in South Carolina.  He was furloughed in Richmond, Virginia in June 1783.  For his service, he received $80 and  a land warrant for 100 acres in Ohio, which he sold.


After the war, he married Jane Crowder.  Their known children were Sarah, Bird Tipton, Henrietta, Permelia, Hopson, Allen, John Tucker, Winefred, Patsey, and William.  Their homesteads included  Mecklenburg County, Virginia (1783-1790); Bear Creek, Chatham County, North Carolina (1790-1808); Montgomery County, Georgia (1808-1810); Turnbull Creek, Williamson County, Tennessee (1810-1819); and Perry County, Tennessee (1820-1843).  He appears in the 1840 Federal Census as one of ten Patriots living in Perry County.  He died there on November 28, 1843.

 

Twenty Patriots with the surname "Talley" are known to have fought in the American Revolution.  Of these, seven eventually received a pension for their service.
